Milestown Community Improvement, Inc., is a Montana nonprofit corporation dedicated to the improvement of Miles City, Montana, with a particular focus on recreational opportunities for children and families.
MCI2 began in 2011 around a lunch table with a group of childhood friends who returned to their hometown to start careers and families. They met monthly to reminisce about old times and discuss their time away from town. Oftentimes these discussions centered on some of the amenities they enjoyed in other communities. Talking eventually led to action and the group began looking for positive ways to improve their community.
After several years of completing smaller projects funded by members, generous local businesses and a lot of sweat equity, in 2014, the idea was tossed out to create our own license plate. The decision to move forward was a difficult one as the expense to have the license plate approved by the state would wipe out the small treasury of MCI2. But the desire to have the ability to continue to serve our community without having to constantly request donations from individuals and businesses was decided to be worth the risk.
The “original” black license plate was designed and became a popular choice not only locally, but across the entire state. The income that has been generated through the years has given MCI2 the ability to be a continued support in our community and over the next decade, income from plate sales has been returned to our community in many ways; whether through local events, chromebooks for schools during covid, large projects such as the Wibaux Park splashpad, or the dozens of smaller donations given throughout the year. To this date, MCI2 has been honored to be able to return more than 1.3 million dollars back to our community due to the continued support of those who choose our black plate.
